In Unity teachings, one of the foundational ideas is that "Life is consciousness." This means that our life experience is shaped by our thoughts, words, and actions. Our outer world is a reflection of our inner state, and to live a fulfilling, joyous life and prosperous life, we must cultivate conscious awareness of what we think, say, and do. Jesus taught this principle throughout His ministry, emphasizing the transformative power of the mind and heart.
Proverbs 23:7 tells us, "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he." This verse highlights the truth that our thoughts shape who we are. What we dwell upon mentally influences how we perceive the world, how we feel, and how we respond to life's circumstances. If we focus on love, peace, and harmony, we will experience these qualities in our lives. If we allow negativity, fear, and judgment to dominate our consciousness, these energies will manifest as struggle and discord. Such a simple idea that is so difficult for the average human mind to adopt and appropriate into daily life.
In Unity, we understand that our thoughts are creative forces. The third Unity principle teaches that "We create our experiences by the activity of our thinking." This creative power is not just about positive thinking for its own sake—it is a spiritual truth that has been validated by both scripture and spiritual experience.
In Matthew 12:34, Jesus said, "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." Here, He reminds us that our words are a direct reflection of our inner state. Speaking words of love, kindness, and truth creates an atmosphere of peace and cooperation. In contrast, when we speak words of anger or judgment, we contribute to an environment of discord. Our words are a powerful extension of our consciousness, and we must be mindful of their impact on others and ourselves.
Unity's fifth principle states that "Through thoughts, words, and actions, we live the Truth we know." This means that spiritual awareness is not just about what we believe but how we live. When we are conscious of our thoughts and words, we naturally begin to align our actions with spiritual principles. We make decisions that are rooted in love, compassion, and wisdom, and we respond to challenges from a place of faith and understanding.
The Apostle Paul echoed this consciousness principle when he urged us in Philippians 4:8, "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." Paul understood the power of directing our thoughts toward what is good and life-giving. By focusing on these higher ideals, we elevate our consciousness and transform our lives.
In practical terms, this means starting each day with an intention to be mindful of our thoughts. When negative or limiting ideas arise, we can gently redirect them to higher truths. We can speak words that affirm the goodness in others and ourselves, and we can choose actions that reflect our highest spiritual values.
Let us remember that life is a reflection of our consciousness. By being aware of our thoughts, words, and actions, we participate in the unfolding of a life that is rich in meaning, joy, and spiritual fulfillment. It is our choice of these thoughts, words and actions that create the life we live. Why not choose peace, joy and happiness.
