Speak, Hear, and See Only the Positive

On our spiritual path, we are reminded of the power that words, thoughts, and perceptions hold. The idea of focusing on the positive is deeply rooted in Scripture and is emphasized in the mystical and metaphysical teachings of the past. By choosing to speak, hear, and see only what is good, true, and uplifting, we align ourselves with the divine energy of God and open the door to greater peace, harmony and abundance in our lives.

The Bible provides clear instruction on the importance of our words and thoughts. Proverbs 18:21 tells us, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." This profound verse reminds us that our words have creative power—they can build up or tear down. Jesus also taught the importance of careful speech, saying in Matthew 12:36, "I tell you, on the day of judgment, people will give account for every careless word they speak." Pretty heavy outcomes for our words and actions.

In addition to speaking with intention, what we allow into our minds and hearts also shapes our reality. Philippians 4:8 provides wise counsel: "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." This call to focus on positive and uplifting thoughts outlines the importance of what we allow ourselves to see and hear.

Unity teaches that our thoughts and words are powerful spiritual tools that create our experiences.  Unity's third principle says that we create our reality through our thoughts and beliefs. When we choose to see only the good in others, hear only words that uplift, and speak only with kindness, we are consciously aligning with the divine presence within us.

Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, said, “To perceive is to create, and what we see is our creation.” This teaching encourages us to be mindful of what we perceive in the world. When we choose to see through the lens of love and positivity, we are participating in the divine creation process. By aligning our thoughts, words, and perceptions with the highest good, we are co-creating a life filled with blessings.

Living in this positive mindset requires constant practice and awareness. We can start by committing to speak only words of encouragement and love, avoiding gossip or harsh criticism. We can be mindful of the conversations we engage in and the media we consume, choosing what nourishes our soul and lifts our spirit.

In moments of challenge, let us remember that we have the power to shift our focus from negativity to positivity. As we practice seeing the good, hearing the good, and speaking the good, we are not ignoring the reality of life’s difficulties, but we are choosing to focus on the divine potential present in every situation.

Let us choose to see, hear, and speak only the good. “I align my thoughts and words with the divine truth, and I create a life of peace, joy, and abundance,” Is our constant prayer. As we begin this practice, we are living the truth of who we are—expressions of God’s love and light in the world.
